Governing From the Center Is a Dead Concept
Remember when Joe Biden took office as president, and the first thing he did was open the borders? Remember how you felt? I certainly do. The initials OMG come to mind. What the hell is he doing, I thought? I muttered untruths to myself such as “he can’t do that” or “this can never be reversed.”
Biden, who had run on a promise of uniting the country, immediately went far left.
Fast forward to Trump’s second term.
Donald Trump came in like a lion, and began to undo everything Biden had done, just as Biden had tried to undo everything Trump had done in his first term.
Liberals are getting a taste of what it felt like to conservatives when it seemed as if Biden was trying to destroy the country. It must seem to them that Trump is laying waste to their precious bureaucracy.

Democrats can dish it out, but they can’t take it.
Under Biden, the country got heavy loads of liberalism, ranging from a ridiculous emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Including (DEI), which seemed divisive to the Right, to seemingly insane ideas like sex-changes and men winning championships in women’s sports.

Biden was weak on foreign policy, could not deal with Russia, China, or Iran, and presided over the start of two bitter foreign wars. But the main thing conservatives despised about Biden was his near total eradication of the southern border.
They proceeded to do what conservatives do.
They pointed out the insanity, they wrote columns explaining what Biden was doing wrong, they re-read the Constitution, and they chose a candidate – Donald Trump – who promised to turn the country back to saneness.
Trump, in his second term, took basic conservative points of view and expanded on them. He named Tom Homan as Border Czar and he became the mirror opposite of Kamala Harris. Homan is pulling no punches in finding people that are in our country illegally and deporting them, with an emphasis on those who have committed crimes involving drugs, human trafficking, and murder.
As did Biden, Trump went on an executive order spree to reverse the culture rot that Biden had instigated. The Left doesn’t like anything that Trump has done, but their biggest beef is the dismantling of the bureaucratic state – in the vernacular, draining the swamp.
They proceeded to do what liberals do.
They marched in the streets, raised hell in general, burned Tesla dealerships, and a couple of them tried to kill Trump. A foolish-looking Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, having been scarred by a major political loss to Trump regarding the latest continuing resolution (CR), has reverted to class envy and denouncing “tax cuts for the rich,” – a well-worn left-wing trope.

However, it is nice to see the Democrats back to their old selves. When the Capitol Riot of January 6, 2021 took place, Democrats found it in their hearts to abhor violence. January 6 was so awful and so damaging to “Our Democracy” that the Left made it into a virtual holiday that I labeled “Januarysixthmas.” To this day, if a liberal isn’t calling a conservative “Hitler,” he/she is harkening back to that wonderful day in the annals of Democrat Party hypocrisy.

I would like to point out (and so I will) that if you look back on recent history – say, as far back as the sixties, you can slap two categories of violence on Republicans: January 6 when they felt the Democrats had stolen an election, and protests outside abortion clinics which consist mostly of kneeling in prayer. (I do not consider fringe groups like the Proud Boys to be conservatives. I consider them to be idiots.)

Democrats, however, are a breed apart. In the past 60 years or so, they’ve rioted or taken over administration buildings at the University of California at Berkely, occupied Wall Street, rioted at Watts and on campuses protesting the Vietnam War or hating Israel, rioting in cities across the country in the summer of 2020 after a Minneapolis cop made a mistake during a routine arrest, and now, declaring a violent war on Tesla.

Oh, but January 6 is the only thing that matters to them. They threw the book at anyone who entered the Capitol, but there never has been any fervor to arrest and convict Black Lives Matter rioters and murderers. As I say, we are back to normal.
Do you even remember the Political Center?
Bill Clinton was center-left. His presidency was somewhat irrelevant, but he worked with House Speaker Newt Gingrich to balance the federal budget. And so, we attacked him for his sexual proclivities with Monica Lewinsky and a host of other women. Those were fun days. But the country ran smoothly and we had nothing better to do than nit-pick.
George W. Bush was center-right. His presidency was extremely relevant because of the attacks of 9/11. He and Dick Cheney got us into a dumb war with Saddam Hussein, which will be W’s legacy. We had a subprime mortgage crisis under Bush that gave us the term “Too Big To Fail” as our government bailed out TBTF automobile manufacturers and TBTF banks. Bush signed a $170-billion-dollar economic stimulus bill. Bush said:
“I had to abandon free market principles in order to save the free market system.”
We did that again under both Trump and Biden due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump thought he was doing the right thing, but Biden was likely being manipulated by handlers – possibly Barack Obama. That manipulation continued, and took the county into a far, far left paradigm that stretched the limits of what the American people could accept. I think it was Obama, doing from the shadows what he could not do when was actually in office.
Whatever the catalyst, Biden ended the era of center-based politics in America.
No matter how left-wing or how loony, Biden supported it. Cutting up little children and rearranging their sex organs—no problem. Erasing the borders – no problem. LGBTQ sex manuals in public school libraries – no problem. And so it went, but the extreme left turn had an equal and opposite reaction. The American people elected Donald Trump once again, to make corrections. They didn’t elect Ron DeSantis or anyone else because they thought only Trump had the backbone to what had to be done.

We are now $36,500,000,000,000 in debt. To use the Left’s word – that’s unsustainable. That’s what Trump is trying to fix – using Elon Musk because there’s nobody else situated to do it the way he can. Homan has the easier job. He can make it hell on illegals in this country and force them out. Trump has his pen and his phone to stop some of the LGBTQ insanity. Musk has the heavy lifting.
Since the Clinton/Gingrich balanced budget, America has gone on a spending spree like no country before it. We can’t just cut back; we’ve got to address a massive National Debt. Trump and Musk are little Davids fighting a gigantic Goliath. The cuts they’re making are cosmetic to this point – even getting rid of the Department of Education. This will have to be a sustained effort for the rest of Trump’s governance and on into the next president and the next. The proclivity of politicians is to hand out free stuff to keep getting reelected, but if we are to bring the debt under control, it will be painful.
The old days of governing from the center seem quaint at this point.
You can blame that on most of our former presidents for not vetoing huge spending bills, Chuck Schumer for demonizing Republicans who were willing to shut down the government to make this point, and your congressman who likely works hard to keep on spending. We no longer have the luxury of a center-right or center-left government.

Biden took the country so far left both in culture and in spending that we needed a junkyard dog to fix it. But wouldn’t it be great to have the luxury of a government that has brought the National Debt and runaway spending under control? Heck, we could even get back to scrutinizing our presidents’ sex lives!
