Keep NATO and Abolish the United Nations

NATO/OTAN stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (in English) and Organisation du traité de l’Atlantique Nord (in French).
No matter what you think of NATO in its current state, or what President Trump thinks, NATO is a good idea.
When the free nations of the world come together to form an alliance against the two big Communist adversaries – Russia and China – that’s a deterrent second only to Mutual Assured Destruction.
In fact, that’s one of the things Russian dictator Vladimir Putin doesn’t want to happen; he fears the idea of Ukraine becoming part of NATO. Why? Because NATO’s Article 5 scares him to death.
On the other hand, Russia and China are two of five nations, along with America, France, and the UK, that have permanent veto power in the Security Council. That makes the UN worthless. NATO needs some fixing, and President Trump knows that, but it is necessary to have it or something like it.

NATO’s deadbeat nations must pay up.
President Trump has upped the ante, causing NATO members to commit to a 5 percent of GDP expenditure on individual national defense, up from 2 percent. That makes sense in a troubled world that includes rogue nations Iran and North Korea in addition to the two Communist superpowers.

However, it’s a two-way street and if Trump gets his way with forcing deadbeat nations like Canada (one of the worst offenders) to pay up, then he ought to keep NATO members in the loop when he takes the U.S. into a war such as the one with Iran.

What is NATO?
NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, formed in the wake of World War II as a collective or an alliance for the defense of its member states. The treaty was signed in 1949 with 30 European nations plus the United States and Canada. Its key feature is Article 5, which calls for all members to come to the defense of any member that is attacked, presumably by the Communist superpowers or their allied rogue states.

Article 5 has only been invoked one time and that was following the attacks on America of 9/11, when the others members pledged to come to our defense. The rub is that too many of the member countries have not lived up to their financial responsibilities, instead, counting on the military might of the United States to ward off threats from Russia and China. And the European members are outraged that Trump did not consult or notify them before engaging in the War in Iran.
What is the United Nations?
The United Nations is different because it has member nations that are evil – namely Russia and China. The UN was established on June 26, 1945 with the mission of promoting international peace among nations – but it’s doomed to failure or irrelevance because it allows members that seek global dominance over other nations.
Russia and China can unilaterally veto Security Council resolutions, so you have to ask what purpose the organization can serve under those circumstances. Older Americans think of the United Nations as a place where Russia’s Nikita Khrushchev banged his shoe, shouting “nyet.”

The purpose of the United Nations is to work with all countries, including Russia and China. The purpose of NATO is to defend against Russia and China.
A powerful NATO, with all members paying their fair share, and ready to roll when necessary, would be powerful.
That’s where Donald Trump wants to be. Either a powerful, dependable NATO, or kill it altogether. Trump has met with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who is an ally of Trump’s, to talk about the slippery slope the organization is facing. The 2 percent of GDP rule wasn’t being reached, and now it at 5 percent – and that will help if member states follow through.
But Trump was miffed when some members closed airspace to any aircraft headed for the Iran War. They did it because they were unhappy that they were not consulted before the war started. FOX News detailed how some of this came down:
- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez closed Spanish airspace to any aircraft — including U.S. bombers departing from the U.K. — involved in strikes against Iran and denied the U.S. use of its in-country bases, the Rota Naval Station and Morón Air Base for any combat, refueling or staging missions related to the Iran conflict.
- President Emmanuel Macron blocked Israeli aircraft from using French airspace to transport U.S.-made munitions intended for the war in Iran, Fox News Digital previously reported.
- Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb told Trump in a phone call a “more European NATO” is taking shape.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which natural gas flows to Europe is a point of contention since Trump did not discuss this with members prior to the start of the war. That leads to the next question, and that is what will China do next? Russia is tied up in its war with Ukraine, but China may want to show some military might. Get ready for it.
War is hell. Always.
It’s hard to know what President Trump thought he could do quickly in Iran, or for that matter what Putin thought he could do quickly in Ukraine. War has a way of ignoring what heads-of-state are thinking then they engage in it. But ask yourself this: if Donald Trump had sold this war to the American people and to Congress and to members of NATO, would it be closer to over? Probably so. Going it alone (except for Israel which has its own reasons for wanting regime change in Iran) is less effective than a multi-national force.

A strong, engaged and well-funded NATO is essential to stop the advances of Russia and China. If, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio has hinted, we pull out, then NATO is likely dead, or it becomes 100 percent European, and of questionable use to American defense.

Perhaps the War in Iran is opening some eyes to the fact that the UN is a waste of time. On the other hand, NATO, or whatever replaces it, ought to be a major factor is maintaining world peace.
