Mamdani’s Marxist America

New York Assembly member (now mayor) Zohran Mamdani (Fair Use)

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani left no room for doubt in his address marking America’s 250th anniversary.  America was born in the original sin of slavery.  We are a nation where children go hungry while billionaires grab for more wealth.  ICE is a group of masked terrorists.  Landlords are bad.  Israel is bad.  Capitalism is bad.

The only thing good about America, to Mamdani, is that it can be changed.  That’s what he intends to do.

President Trump, at Mount Rushmore, pledged that what he called a Communist movement will be stopped.  A lot of this disagreement centers around immigration.

Who should we take in?  How many?  The words on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor,” are often quoted.  What do these words actually mean, and how should we interpret them in today’s world?

Mamdani’s America would leave no room for creation of wealth.

This is the little problem that the anti-capitalists have.  Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Michael Dell employ many thousands of people.  And they offer products and services that make people’s lives better.  Mamdani’s way is government-run grocery stores and rent control.  Musk wants to “take the fiction out of science fiction” and reach for the stars.  Mamdani would shut him down in a New York minute.

The world of the tech billionaires is a society wherein nothing is impossible.  Mamdani’s is one of progress moving like molasses under a multitude of government regulations and forced equity.  One side offers rugged individualism and promise.  The other offers staleness and misery.

Without people of vision who create things like computers, cellphones, and rocketships to the moon and beyond, humanity would be stuck in place.  That’s what Mamdani and his Democrat Socialists of America seem to want.  Musk wants to go to Mars and beyond.  It’s the world of the old moribund Soviet Union, versus the optimistic world of Star Trek.

Mamdani gave us his vision, speaking from behind George Washington’s desk.

The Mayor is on a roll.  His preferred Marxist candidates are winning primaries, and he’s seizing the moment.  He made it clear that he would like to see open borders yet again.

We see masked agents terrorizing our streets, eating food cooked by our undocumented neighbors before spiriting them away in unmarked vans.  We see a nation whose immense wealth has been built by those with calloused, dirt-streaked hands … a nation that has allowed so much of that wealth to be held in the soft hands of a precious few.

This is Marxism in its purest form.  The foreigner is always to be preferred over the citizen.  Government should control wealth.  No billionaires allowed.  Forget about creating humaniform robots to pick our fruit or going to Mars.  Marxism allows for a ruling class, but the rest of us have to be equal and that includes Musk and Bezos.  No more of that damned innovation.

Mamdani makes it clear that he opposes the War in Iran, likely because of his hatred for Israel.

I see America when we spend our tax dollars on bombs and bailouts, when we sell our elections to the highest bidder.

What if we did as he suggests, and disarm, and give all our money to the poor?  Russia and China would love that, but the poor would mostly remain poor, and we’d have to work hard to prevent people like Musk from getting back to that banned innovation.  He’s right that rich people like to run for office.  He might mention that to the billionaire governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, who used his wealth to get where he is and now wants to the president.

In an attempt to be somewhat patriotic, Mamdani reminded us all how he came to America – not on a boat, but on an airplane.

My family did not arrive by boat, although we saw the Statue of Liberty from the window of the plane.  Even from the air, we could make out the promise of America—the promise of the beautiful, patriotic work of rendering America, year after year, a little more faithful to its founding ideals.

I don’t think Mamdani meant the founding ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but rather the Marxist ideals of equity, misery, and decay.

That bring us to the words written on the Statue of Liberty:  Give me your tired, your poor…

Those words are from the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, who wrote them in 1883 to help raise money for the statue’s pedestal.  Some say it’s more than just hope for the world’s downtrodden; it actually means that the United States should take in all of them.  Here’s the entire verse:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The words are indeed beautiful and inspirational.  Would that we had the wherewithal to take in all the world’s mistreated people.  In the 1800s, the United States was a developing nation that needed workers and needed to be populated.  It was a very different nation, existing on an Earth that had nowhere near the population it has now.

Here’s why, in my mind, we can no longer take the inscription literally.

Virtually everyone in third-world countries would love to come here.  It’s not possible for us to take them all.  Our country isn’t big enough – like Russia or China – to take all the billions of people who would love to emigrate.  Note that few of them, Bernie Sanders is a possible exception, have any desire to go to Russia or China.

And we’ve learned that open borders, as we had under Joe Biden, allow the worst of the worst along with the best from other countries.  The murders that took place under the Biden open-border policy are largely ignored by the Left, but were devastating to the families they touched.  Open borders let in the tired and poor, along with gang members, human traffickers, drug cartels, and other criminals.

The biggest factor against many of the tired and the poor is lack of assimilation.

I’m willing to take in as many of Emma Lazarus’ downtrodden people as we can manage if they are willing to become true Americans.  That is, they pledge to put away old loyalties.  Learn American history and celebrate it.  Speak English.  Understand that we are one nation under God.

America is a nation that welcomes all religions, but we have to define what a religion is.  We are Christian, Jewish, Hindu, whatever, but we must reject “religions” such as Islam that are violent death cults.  It’s a shame and a tragedy that people like Ilhan Omar are allowed to come here and to infiltrate our Congress with anti-American ideologies.  This has to stop.

I love America.  Whatever his faults, Donald Trump obviously loves America.

There are people in our Congress that obviously don’t love this country.  We have a right to deny them public office, and to deny them entry into this country in the first place.  Imagine if millions of Americans emigrated to Iran and tried to change it.

That’s why Zohran Mamdani is dangerous.  He obviously despises this country, but he’s slick and he was able to be elected in far-left New York.  Now his goal is to change America into something like his old country.  Something Karl Marx would celebrate.  President Trump is right to say the Communist/Marxist movement must be stopped.

We’ll take as many of the world’s huddled masses yearning to breathe free as we can, but we should never accept another Zohran Mamdani who sees the United States as a great country only because it gives him the freedom to tear it apart.
