Trump in China: He said, Xi said

They say little things mean a lot.  And in Beijing, President Trump may have gotten a bunch of little things.

He got red carpet treatment, something Chinese President Xi Jinping knows he likes.  They feasted on roast duck, and Trump admired the roses at the official residence.  Xi promised to give him some seeds.  Maybe China will stem the flow of Chinese-made chemicals into Mexico that are used to make deadly Fentanyl that comes into the United States.  Maybe China will work some trade deals and buy some Boeing jetliners.

However, the two big elephants in the room, Iran and Taiwan, will never be part of a deal that benefits America – unless it benefits China more.

That’s the way it works, and President Trump and his diplomatic team should take any promises with a grain of salt.

All smiles and handshakes for the cameras, but bitter words in private.

Near the end of the three-day mission, Trump and Xi and a gaggle of aides and translators huddled for three hours.  Trump told reporters: “It’s really been a great couple of days.”  Xi was also smiling when he said this has been a “milestone visit.”  But, oh to be a bilingual fly on the wall.

Trump, who stated repeatedly that we are just fine in Iran and that we do not need China’s help to end the war, was almost surely hoping to get some help from Xi to end the war.  China buys a lot of Iranian oil, and would like the Strait of Hormuz open so that oil can be transported to the country.

On the other hand, helping Trump solve his Iran problem is likely low on Xi’s list of priorities.

In his mind, anything bad for the United States is good for China.  China may have enough oil reserves to weather a longer war, so that’s why news reports say that Beijing has shown little public interest in getting more involved.

Meanwhile, back home, useful idiots like Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, are going on the Sunday shows to talk about how bad off we are in the war, and how our stockpile is being depleted.  Xi must really love that.  There’s nothing like having an American senator claiming that the United States is weak, and Xi must love the idea of the entire Democratic Party saying the same thing.

The other big issue is Taiwan, and Xi is said to have given Trump an earful.

China wants Taiwan to be in Communist hands and has for a long time.  The island country, about a hundred miles off the Chinese mainland, is a key manufacturer of computer components such as semiconductors, and there are people who believe if China gets control of Taiwan, the AI race is pretty much over.

The United States’ official policy on Taiwan has been what’s called “strategic ambiguity.”  That appeases China by not opposing a reunification that would come at the point of a gun or an invasion, but makes China wary that we might send our military to prevent it from happening.  China can’t be sure what we would do if it invaded, and that’s about all that’s stopping them.  Xi made it crystal clear that Taiwan was the biggest issue on the agenda during the summit, even to warning the Americans that the wrong words might lead to a very bad summit.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, not one to mince words, told NBC News that U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed.  He cautioned China that it would be a “terrible mistake” to invade Taiwan.  According to NBC News, he framed Xi’s warnings as “standard practice.”

The bottom line on who intimidated who and how we may find out…

President Trump would like to see Taiwan spend more money on its own defense, and this past December the White House announced an $11 billion arms sale to the island.  But so far, none of those arms have been shipped.  Was that issue discussed in Beijing?  Likely, it was, and likely Xi made it clear that he would not want that to happen.  And perhaps his good friend Donald Trump would not send the arms after all.

So, will he?  Fulfilling those arms shipments would be a sign of strength to the Communist Chinese Party and to Xi himself.  I have no idea what was actually said in those meetings on this subject but I know this:

If Xi was able to charm Trump into not sending the arms, that will constitute a major victory for the CCP.  Trump may have returned with rose seeds, but Xi wants much more.  He wants Taiwan and he’s anxious to take it.

Read The Epoch Times as much as you can.

I am a bit biased since I wrote mountains of advertising and marketing copy for The Epoch Times before I joined the Cardle and Woolley Show in Austin on Talk 1370.  I flew to New York in December of 2019 to attend planning sessions at the Manhattan offices of The Epoch TimesNo newspaper or network in America understands China and the Chinese Communist Party like The Epoch Times Their founder escaped from China and came to the U.S. with a mission to stop the spread of the CCP’s influence.

So, I have a pretty good idea of how China operates, playing the long game, influencing every aspect of American life from schools to universities to the halls of Congress.  They have a 100-year plan to dominate the world.  In the wake of this historic meeting in Beijing, our eyes should be wide open about what Xi and the CCP were trying to accomplish, and it was nothing that would benefit the United States.

We can judge this summit on what Xi got that is good for China juxtaposed to what Trump got that is good for America.  It may take some time to find out who won.
